Criminal Justice Summer Course, Barcelona, Spain
3rd-6th of July 2018. The R2PRIS Multi-level radicalisation prevention in prisons has been presented at the second Criminal Justice Summer Course, in Barcelona. This Summer Course, organised by EuroPris and CEP took place at the Centre for Legal Studies and Specialised Training. This year’s theme was radicalisation and violent extremism.

R2PRIS International Conference on Radicalisation Prevention in Prisons, Lisbon, Portugal
The International Conference “R2PRIS Radicalisation Prevention in Prisons” took place in Lisbon, Portugal, on the 3rd of July, 2018. IPS_Innovative Prisons Systems and BSAFE LAB (UBI Beira Interior University) – in collaboration with the Portuguese Prison and Probation Administration – were the organisers of the event.The conference was attended by over sixty participants from seventeen countries, including not only the neighbouring Spain but also Belgium, France, UK, Sweden, Norway, Israel, Switzerland, Canada, the United States, and other European countries. The conference focused especially on the R2PRIS approach to radicalisation prevention in prisons; the participants had the chance to learn about the assessment tools and training programme that have been developed in the framework of the R2PRIS project, which are intended both for prison management staff and for practitioners.

Caribbean conference of heads of correctional services, Kingston, Jamaica
R2PRIS presented at the Caribbean conference of heads of correctional services hosted the 12th Conference of the Association of Caribbean Heads of Corrections and Prison Services (ACHCPS), from the 11th to the 14th of June, 2018.The conference was held under the theme “Transforming Prisons and Correctional Services for Regional Development“. Within the scope of the event, Mr. Pedro das Neves, on behalf of IPS Innovative Prison Systems and of ICPA The International Corrections and Prisons Association, presented on“Policies and Interventions for Radicalisation Prevention in Prisons” – namely the tools and pilots developed under the R2PRIS project.

Last training event focuses of feedback of the project's outputs. 16th-20th April, 2018.  Penitentiary experts from Belgium, Portugal, Romania, Norway, and Turkey gathered in Brussels, between the 16th and the 20th of April, 2018, for the third and final short-term staff training event of the R2PRIS project. The experts’ feedback on the radicalisation risk assessment toolset and the e-Learning course that have been developed in the scope of the R2PRIS project was a crucial feature, leading to the final fine-tuning of the project’s outputs.

Radicalisation prevention in prisons training. Bucharest, 5th-9th March, 2018. Expert practitioners from Romania, Norway, Belgium, Portugal, and Turkey met for a week of intense work at Jilava Penitentiary. The participants provided feedback on the R2PRIS assessment tools and training being piloted in their respective countries.

European Commission Conference on Radicalisation in Prisons. Brussels, Belgium
R2PRIS project presented at European Commission's Conference The R2PRIS project was chosen to be presented at the Conference on Radicalisation in Prisons, that took place in Brussels on February 27th, 2018, hosted by the European Commission in close cooperation with the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU and with the support of EuroPris and the Confederation of European Probation.

R2PRIS Seminar and meeting. Ankara, Turkey
The fifth Transnational Project Meeting of R2PRIS was held in Ankara, Turkey, on November 7th and 8th, 2017. Hosted by the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses, the Agenda included the presentation and discussion about the radicalisation screening tools and training (including classroom training materials, the train the trainer course, and the R2PRIS e-Learning course), a discussion of the upcoming project's activities and milestones, and a visit to the Ankara Female Closed Prison.   

19th ​International Conference of ICPA. London, UK
ICPA International Corrections and Prisons Association. 19th Annual Conference. London, 22nd-27th October, 2017. ​Mr. Pedro das Neves and Ms. Susana Reis (IPS_Innovative Prison Systems) presented and discussed the progress and outcomes of the work developed in the framework of R2PRIS project on the preventing (and Fighting) Radicalisation in European Prisons.

​R2PRIS international training. ​From the 24th to the 29th September, 2017, twenty-five experts representing seven jurisdictions (Belgium, Norway, Turkey, Romania, USA, Switzerland, and Portugal) have gathered to participate in the R2PRIS Radicalisation Prevention in Prisons staff training event that took place in the historical Lisbon prison, in Portugal.

The third Transnational Project Meeting of R2PRIS was held in Lillestrøm, Norway, on November 8th and 9th, 2016. Hosted by the Norwegian Correctional Service (KDI), the agenda included the presentation of the activities that have been developed so far, a discussion of the upcoming project's activities and milestones, and a visit to the Halden Prison. ​  

18th ​International Conference of ICPA. Bucharest, Romania
ICPA International Corrections and Prisons Association. 18th Annual Conference. Bucharest, 23-28th October, 2016.
​Mr. Pedro das Neves (IPS_Innovative Prison Systems) and Mr. Adrian Neagoe (National Administration of Penitentiaries of Romania) presented and discussed the progress and preliminary outcomes of the work developed in the framework of R2PRIS project on preventing (and countering) Radicalisation in European Prisons.

"Pathways to Radicalisation and Recruitment: Intervention Strategies in the Balkans, Central and South Eastern Europe”
R2PRIS presented at workshop “Pathways to Radicalisation and Recruitment: Intervention Strategies in the Balkans, Central and South Eastern Europe”
On behalf of IPS, Mr. Pedro das Neves participated as the invited speaker at the workshop “Pathways to Radicalisation and Recruitment: Intervention Strategies in the Balkans, Central and South Eastern Europe” organised by the Romanian Centre for Prison Studies of the University of Vest Timisoara and the National Administration of Prisons of Romania from 24 to 28 of April, 2016, in Timisoara. The event counted with 30 high-level officials (security, education, intelligence) from 15 countries in the region. With the title “Reinsertion, radicalisation prevention and intelligence led corrections - Kafka, Orwell, Bentham and Foucault revisited?” Mr. das Neves addressed the audience inviting the participants to reflect on the importance of the use of existing prison technologies to promote a balanced approach between rehabilitation/reinsertion, radicalisation prevention and intelligence led corrections (digital footprints). At the event Mr. das Neves presented the work that is being done in the framework of the R2PRIS project and invited the participating countries to join as associated partners.​​

Other relevant events on radicalisation in prisons

  • ERA Seminar on Rehabilitation and Alternative Sanctions to Detention for Radicalised Individuals, Utrecht, 8th-9th March, 2018. ​This third seminar, in a series of four co-funded by the European Commission on issues related to countering terrorism and radicalisation, will focus on rehabilitation and alternative sanctions to detention in relation to radicalised individuals. The use of the relevant Framework Decisions within this context will be analysed, along with the judiciary’s role in this area.

  • EC Conference on Radicalisation in prisons, Brussels, 27th February, 2018. The European Commission organised, in close cooperation with the Bulgarian Presidency and with the support of EuroPris and the Confederation of European Probation (CEP), a Conference on Radicalisation in Prisons. Participants from numerous member states included prison and probation experts, judges, prosecutors, etc.
 
  • The XVIII World Congress of Criminology. Delhi NCR, India, 15-19th December, 2016. The conference focused on Urbanization, Globalization, Development and Crime: Opportunities and Challenges of the XXI century. Some of the principle topics for the 18th World Congress on Criminology were Extremism, Terrorism & Warfare: Mass Violence and its Impact on Society, The Victimization of Vulnerable Populations: Crimes against Women, Children, the Elderly & Minorities, The Politics of Crime: The Role of Crime and Terrorism in National & International Decisions & Interventions.​
 
  • De-radicalisation course in Spanish prisons. Málaga,  16-18th November, 2016. ACAIP together with the SOCIETY AND JUSTICE FOUNDATION organise a course at the Faculty of Communication of Málaga named  “Communication strategies, early warning and intervention: contributions for deradicalisation in Spanish prisons.”

  • European City & Public Security Summit, London, 5th-6th October, 2016.​ ​The Summit will address the most significant threats facing the EU and its citizens, risks to cities, industries and major events and will provide strategies to be better prepared to detect and respond to hostile intent, or a terror attack. It will bring together policy makers and leading experts from the private and public sector, including former and current police and counter terrorism services and the heads of Security of some of Europe’s largest sports, leisure, retail and public attractions.

  • OSCE-wide Counter-Terrorism Conference 2016: Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and Radicalisation that Lead to Terrorism, Berlin, 31stMay - 1st June, 2016.  More than 300 experts from across the OSCE region gathered for the annual OSCE-wide Counter-Terrorism Conference, which  focused on preventing and countering Violent Extremism and Radicalisation that Lead to Terrorism (VERLT). 
    Participants discussed how to deal with returning foreign terrorist fighters and possible ways for their re-integration into society. The Conference also offered a forum for exchange on international trends concerning the fight against terrorism, focusing especially on the role of youth and women.​​​​

  • Radicalisation and Violent Extremism Conference, Barcelona, April 26th, 2016.  Organised by EuroPris with its partners of the Criminal Justice Platform, CEP and EFRJ, and with support of the Centre for Legal Studies of the Ministry of Justice of Catalonia.

  • International Conference on Deradicalisation and Countering Violent Extremism, Kuala Lumpur, Jan. 25th, 2016.​Local communities should be more active in programs aimed at ending violent extremism, top government officials told an international conference convened in Kuala Lumpur to help counter the Islamic State’s (IS) radical views. By working with communities, governments can help nip IS-perpetrated violence in the bud and hasten the rehabilitation of militants jailed for their deadly actions, the officials said on Monday, the opening day of the two-day conference on "Deradicalisation and Countering Violent Extremism" hosted by Malaysia.

  • International Experts’ Conference: “RADICALISATION AND VIOLENT EXTREMISM – Disengagement, prevention, monitoring” (Barcelona, Spain – 14th October, 2015). Radicalisation and the dangers caused by extremists to European countries are a paramount concern of the criminal justice system.  This international conference for experts in the field offered an opportunity to review the development of interventions and set the agenda for future collaborative work.

  • High-level ministerial conference: The criminal justice response to radicalisation (Brussels, Belgium – 19th October, 2015)  The Conference will facilitate the exchange of views on effective interventions, management and sentencing practices to prevent the spread of radicalised ideas inside and outside prisons in the European Union, which could lead to acts of terrorism. The discussions will contribute to finding responses in the criminal justice sector on how to deal with this sensitive and complex problem.

  • Conference on fight against radicalisation in prisons leading to terrorism, Bucharest 9th-10th June, 2015: Directors of prison and probation services from the 47 Council of Europe member states and the USA discussed measures to counter radicalisation in prisons leading to violent extremism and terrorism. The Council of Europe Conference of Directors of Prison and Probation Services, with the theme “Radicalisation and other strategic challenges,”  also discussed challenges in managing prisons and probation services during economic crises, the use of new technologies in prison and the effects on children of the incarceration of their parents.
